In USA

After the late night, we had a more sedate morning. We were going to walk the Highline, the former railway which has been turned into a park – along with walking through the Meatpacking District and Chelsea Market. You certainly get the sense that this is a more upmarket area than Midtown, despite it being so close. This is an area I had never explored before, and it’s something worth exploring, especially if you like the Kings Road ‘vibe’ in London.

As we walked around for a couple of hours, we headed to our ‘surprise’ for the day – that of Stardust, a famous diner where the waiters sing. Usually, and was the case today you have to queue down the road to get in, but we had VIP access. I can’t stress how joyful it is, even if you don’t like musical theatre it’s such a great experience and something you would want to do. For me, this was one of the unexpected highlights of the whole trip.

Our afternoon activity was The Summit, a new viewing platform at the top of One Vanderbilt, near Grand Central Station. It is quite different from the others as you have to wear sunglasses, given the first room is near enough surrounded by mirrors and it got very hot! You do get a fantastic view though! There are other rooms for ‘balls’ and other art installations which gives it a completely different atmosphere.

For our last night in New York, we had dinner at the Marriott Marquis – with an amazing view over Times Square. This would be the place to be on New Year’s Eve, as you’re right where the ball is being dropped. It has a large balcony overlooking Times Square, with a separate mezzanine further back. Speaking to their Sales and Marketing Executive – they also look after all the police, security and emergency services on New Years’ Eve, with a whole floor dedicated to them.
