Germany
Germany is a diverse travel destination that offers an array of experiences, from historic cities to breathtaking natural landscapes. Its rich cultural heritage is evident in iconic sites like Neuschwanstein Castle, the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, and the Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site towering over the Rhine River. Berlin, the capital, is a hub of history and culture, where landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Wall Memorial, and Museum Island attract millions of visitors each year. Munich, the gateway to Bavaria, is another highlight, renowned for its Oktoberfest celebrations, centuries-old beer halls, and the stunning Nymphenburg Palace.
For nature lovers, Germany’s outdoor offerings are just as impressive. The Black Forest, famous for its dense woods, cuckoo clocks, and picturesque villages, provides opportunities for hiking and exploration. The Romantic Rhine is ideal for leisurely river cruises, where medieval castles and charming towns line the riverbanks. Meanwhile, the Bavarian Alps beckon adventure seekers with skiing in winter and alpine trekking in summer. Germany’s national parks, including Berchtesgaden and Saxon Switzerland, showcase unspoiled natural beauty and unique geological formations, making them perfect for those seeking tranquil escapes.
Germany’s festive calendar is another reason to visit, offering cultural experiences throughout the year. The Christmas markets, such as those in Nuremberg and Dresden, transform city squares into winter wonderlands filled with handmade crafts, delicious treats, and traditional glühwein. During the spring and summer months, events like the Stuttgart Beer Festival and Karneval der Kulturen in Berlin highlight the country’s vibrant spirit and diversity. Whether exploring historical sites, immersing yourself in scenic landscapes, or enjoying local festivals, Germany promises a rich and multifaceted travel experience that caters to every kind of traveller.
Germany might not be at the top of the list of holiday destinations for many, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go there, because there is so much to offer. I have travelled extensively around Germany, and to every major German city sometimes even going between them on the train.
My main motivation for going there was to go to the Christmas markets, something that started when I was at school and I went to my first in the city of Aachen on the Dutch border. Ever since I have travelled across Germany (Frankfurt, Dortmund, Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, Nuremberg, Munich), before settling on my favourite in Dresden. It’s now a whole lot easier to get there thanks to the direct train from Berlin Airport.
There is something about Dresden that’s different to other cities. There’s an interesting mix of old and new, with a wonderfully spectacular setting for its largest market in the Aldstadt. Of course, if you like baking, it’s also the home to Stollen, and there is plenty of that around the city!
