Italy is such a fabulously evocative country, and I can understand why so many have such a close bond to it, given its incredible history. There is so much, so easily accessible on our doorsteps, but you only really see the true modern Italy when to step beyond the classic tourist traps.
Over the years I have travelled extensively all over the northern half of Italy, having a range of different experiences. Merano on the border with Austria was a delight, with it’s unusual mix of Italian and Germanic dialect, food and culture – including the most stunning views through the valley you’re likely to find in the country. Further south, I also went to the Imagna Valley in Lombardy with Magari Tours, and explored the unexplored and lovely city of Bergamo Alto.
There are of course then the ‘classics’ of Florence and Venice, both of which I have been to multiple times and are just as fascinating every time you visit. If you venture a little way from these, for Venice the greater Veneto region, or Siena or Lucca in Tuscany, you definitely get a different side to the destination.
