Greece
The great history of Greece is undeniable, obvious from the very moment you arrive, although this is in parallel with some of the most fabulous, luxurious beach destinations in Europe with all the facilities you can ever wish for.
To feel the history of the nation, the first stop is of course Athens and the rock of the Acropolis rising above the centre of the vast city. At its summit the ruins of the Parthenon, one of the defining images in western world, along with the home of the Olympic Games, the temple of Zeus and the bustling Plaka district.
Greece has so many islands to choose from, some large and some so small you could be near enough the only people to be staying there, all connected by a series of ferries and light aircraft. Each island is unique, with its own character – be it the hills of Crete and the Samara Gorge, the windmills of Mykonos, the iconic coastline of Santorini, and the harbours of Corfu.
