The Azores, Portugal

The Azores

The Azores are a group of nine volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean and a hidden gem for anyone looking for a nature-loving holiday. The autonomous region of Portugal offers a stunning and diverse landscape, a mild and temperate climate, and a rich and varied culture.

The first thing that will astonish you in the Azores is nature, which covers the islands with green and fertile vegetation, dramatic craters, and hot springs. You can enjoy the spectacular views of the islands from many viewpoints, such as the Vista do Rei, the Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, and the Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego. You can also explore the natural wonders of the islands, such as the Sete Cidades Lake, the Furnas Valley, and the Capelinhos volcano. Or you can discover the unique flora and fauna of the islands, such as the hydrangeas, the azaleas, and the whales.

But the Azores are not only about nature. The islands are also a place of adventure, and you can find it in many ways. You can experience the thrill and excitement of water sports, such as sailing, diving, and kayaking, in the clear and blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. You can also enjoy the adrenaline and fun of land activities, such as hiking, biking, and horse riding, in the rugged and varied terrain of the islands. And of course, you can try the famous cozido, which is a stew cooked underground by the geothermal heat of the volcanoes.

The Azores are also a place of culture, and you can experience it in many ways. You can learn about the history and identity of the islands, by visiting the museums, the churches, and the monuments, such as the Carlos Machado Museum, the São Sebastião Church, and the Fort of São Brás. You can also immerse yourself in the local traditions, such as the Holy Ghost festivals, the cheese making, and the folk music, by visiting the villages, the farms, and the festivals. And of course, you can taste the delicious and varied Azorean cuisine, which combines seafood, meat, cheese, and wine, in a variety of dishes, such as lapas, alcatra, and queijadas.

The Azores are an island that will enchant you with its beauty, its adventure, and its culture, and that will make you feel relaxed with its tranquillity, its hospitality, and its spirit. A holiday to the Azores is a journey to the hidden gem of nature, adventure, and culture, and a journey that you will never forget. The Azores are an island that you have to see to believe, and an island that you will always love.

I absolutely loved the Azores, and although I only had a week on Sao Miguel, you really did get a sense that this was a really unique and special destination. For those who have been to Madeira, it’s nothing like Madeira apart from a lot of greenery and they also have a flower festival – but the amount of cows on the road (physically) makes you think you are in Wales or New Zealand.

Something else you notice is everything is so cheap, I can’t remember going anywhere else in Europe where food and drink is so cheap – but it is quite basic. They do like simple meat and vegetable dishes, and even the style of the hotels are quite simple, almost Scandinavian.

If you like walking, it’s absolutely perfect – although I would suggest that having a car is probably the best option on the island. Especially if you want to visit the mysterious twin coloured lakes at Sete Cidedes.
