Across many Mediterranean countries, local communities face ongoing challenges, particularly when it comes to caring for stray and abandoned animals. In countries such as Portugal, dedicated volunteers and small charities work tirelessly to protect animals. Over the past 12 months, I have become a volunteer and fundraiser for a local animal rescue charity, O’ Jardim Da Aryel (Aryels’ Garden), which is based in Lagoa on the Algarve.

Aryels Garden was set up Irene Nunes, six years ago, to rescue vulnerable animals, providing a safe haven and a second chance for animals who, through no fault of their own are in desperate circumstances. Currently they are caring for 275 cats, 22 dogs, 2 goats, 1 donkey and numerous hens. The charity ensures that each animal receives veterinary care, nourishment, shelter and socialisation, where possible, they are carefully matched with potential adoptive families or a ‘godparent,’ making a small monthly donation.
In addition, the charity also supports ’colonies’ in the area, ensuring there is regular food and runs a sterilisation programme to ensure the colonies are contained. Their valuable work not only transforms the lives of animals but also strengthens the wider community by promoting responsible ownership and compassion.

However, these rescue shelters frequently operate with very limited funding, only receiving local government grants for the sterilisation programme. Basic supplies such as food, bedding, medicines and materials for the shelters are often in short supply. Following the heavy rains and floods over the winter months on the Algarve, many of the shelters suffered structural damage and are in need of repair, pumping out the flood water and replacing collapsed flooring. So I got together with a small group of friends, and together we hatched a fundraising plan and managed to raise an amazing 5500 euros!
The event was held at a local Indian Restaurant in Carvoeiro on Sunday, 1st March, and 150 guests experienced a delicious Indian buffet with live music and dancing from local celebrities, Tiago, Mandy Davies and Rob Lowe. Between us, we were able to source a selection of fantastic raffle prizes, including airline tickets, luxury hotel accommodation, spa treatments & restaurant vouchers. Prizes were donated by many of our tour operator partners and also local businesses that benefit from tourism and like to support local communities and charities.
