After six brilliant days at Le Paradis resort, we embarked on the next leg of our anniversary celebration, heading northwest towards the Grand Baie area – famed for its drier microclimate. The 90-minute journey across the island was a visual treat, as I couldn’t help but marvel at the island’s impressive development. The road networks have significantly improved, and commercial buildings, shopping centres, and luxury resorts dot the landscape. Tourism has truly flourished here, standing proudly alongside traditional industries like sugar beet and cotton.
Our next stop was the Beachcomber property at Trou Aux Biches – a stunning tropical resort completely rebuilt in 2010. Despite the modern makeover, I confess a soft spot remains for the rustic, original Trou Aux Biches where we were married 30 years ago. Arriving at the resort, we were welcomed by an impressive entrance. As with all Beachcomber properties, the reception area is light, airy, and spacious, offering breathtaking ocean views. After a swift check-in, we were shown to our Tropical Junior Suite. The room was impressive – a generous space with a patio that opened onto lush tropical gardens. The bathroom was equally remarkable, featuring a separate toilet, shower, large bath, and an outdoor, enclosed tropical rain shower – a delightful touch that would suit any home.
Spread over 35 hectares of tropical beachfront gardens, the resort’s accommodation is thoughtfully divided into low-level suites grouped into ‘sections’ along the front. Each section boasts its own pool, meaning that while the main pool can be lively due to its size and central location, there are plenty of quieter alternatives – some even heated. In total, the resort offers an astounding 106 pools, including suites with plunge pools.
True to the Beachcomber brand, Trou Aux Biches provides an idyllic setting not only for weddings and honeymoons but also for families seeking a holiday filled with both relaxation and activity. Guests can choose from six restaurants featuring a diverse range of cuisines including Asian fusion, Italian, Indian, buffet, and à la carte options. For those with a penchant for sport, there’s no shortage of activities – from sailing, water skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, and paddleboarding to tennis, table tennis, and a state-of-the-art gym. There’s even access to an 18-hole golf course to keep every member of the family entertained.
During my stay at Trou Aux Biches, I also took the chance to explore the three other Beachcomber resorts in the area: Le Victoria, Le Canonier, and the Royal Palm. Each offers its own unique experience, showcasing the diverse appeal of Mauritius.
