American Airlines is continuing to expand its international network for summer 2027, announcing seven new international routes and three new destinations.

The new routes will connect the US with Europe and Asia, with additional services to Amsterdam, Barcelona, London, Nice and Tokyo. All seven new routes will operate daily, giving travellers more choice when planning a long-haul holiday in 2027.

For UK travellers, the expansion is particularly interesting thanks to the additional New York–London Heathrow service, as well as new opportunities to reach Portugal, Iceland, Austria and southern France.

Seven new international routes

American’s 2027 programme will see new services from several of its major US hubs, with Philadelphia continuing to strengthen its position as one of the airline’s key gateways to Europe.

New York JFK will gain new routes to Amsterdam and Nice, whilst Charlotte adds a new connection to Barcelona. Chicago will gain a new service to Tokyo Narita, and Philadelphia will add three new European destinations: Porto, Reykjavik and Vienna.

Route Start date Frequency Aircraft
Chicago – Tokyo Narita 19 March 2027 Daily Boeing 787-9
New York JFK – Amsterdam 28 March 2027 Daily Airbus A321XLR
Philadelphia – Porto 28 March 2027 Daily Airbus A321XLR

American is also increasing access to some of Europe’s most popular cities.

From New York JFK, the new Amsterdam service provides another direct option for travellers heading to the Netherlands, whilst the new Nice service creates a particularly useful gateway to the French Riviera.

Charlotte will gain a new daily service to Barcelona, giving American another option for reaching Spain from one of its largest US hubs.

For us UK travellers, American is also adding a fourth daily flight between New York JFK and London Heathrow, starting 28 March 2027. The service will be operated by a Boeing 787-9 featuring American’s Flagship Suite seats, adding another premium option on the busy transatlantic route.

The Airbus A321XLR opens up more possibilities

Several of American’s new routes will be operated by its Airbus A321XLR, including services to Amsterdam, Nice, Porto and Vienna.

The aircraft is particularly important to American’s strategy because its extended range allows the airline to operate thinner international routes profitably, connecting US cities directly with destinations that might previously have required a larger widebody aircraft.

The A321XLR also features American’s premium Flagship Suite product, giving passengers on selected routes access to private suites with privacy doors. American is continuing to expand its premium offering as it grows its long-haul network.
