LA PALMA & TENERIFE:
ASTRONOMY AND VOLCANOES
ASTRONOMY AND VOLCANOES
Visit an array of telescopes and take part in an expert-led stargazing at Europe’s most important astronomy sites in La Palma and Tenerife. Accompanied by a New Scientist expert, you will also visit rare sub-tropical rainforests, volcanoes and ancient cave petroglyphs. Due to its clean dry air, and low light pollution, UNESCO has designated La Palma its first ‘Starlight Reserve’ and has also recognised it as a Biosphere Reserve for its volcanic landscape and lush laurel forests. On neighbouring Tenerife, we will explore the dramatic interior of Mount Teide National Park, which offers perfect conditions for stargazing.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY
DAY 1
We fly to the island of La Palma, where we stay at the Parador for the first four nights. La Isla Bonita is a compact volcanic island with a unique national environment and exceptional conditions for astronomy. The Parador de La Palma has a swimming pool with spectacular views of the Atlantic and extensive gardens, which contain native dragon trees, Mount Teide bugloss and spurges.
DAY 2
The Canary Islands are an active volcanic archipelago and the most recent major eruption came in 2021 at Cumbre Vieja. We will visit the region of the volcano where you will see the dramatic remnants of the crater. We will visit the region of the volcano where you will see the dramatic remnants of the crater. We then continue to Llano de Jable, an astronomic viewpoint which has an advanced 10-inch telescope, for a workshop on the night time landscape photography.
DAY 3
Today we shall drive to the north of the island, where we visit the Los Tilos laurel forest, a rare example of sub-tropical Laurisilva; a dense, primitive forest full of broad-leaved trees that dominated the planet millions of years ago. We continue to La Zarza, a ravine which was home to the early inhabitants of the island. Here we see endemic bird species and enigmatic prehistoric rock art.
DAY 4
Today we shall make a daytime visit to the Astronomical Observatory of the Roque de Los Muchachos, at an attitude of 2,420 metres. Here we will see one of the most complete telescope arrays in the world, with a total of 16 telescopes including the latest optical telescope in the world. We will have a tour of the site and a private talk from one of the scientists.
DAY 5
We shall take the ferry to neighbouring Tenerife this morning., travelling into the Teide National Park. At a height of over 2,000 metres, the Parador Las Canadas del Teide has views over Mount Teide and offers a simple but comfortable, indoor swimming pool and a restaurant. In the evening we have an introductory talk from local resident and expert Christopher Monckton.
DAY 6
Today, we will explore the Teide National Park, a dramatic lunar landscape which surrounds the highest peak in Spain. We will see a number of endemic species of flora and fauna and take a cable car to see the peak at over 12,000ft. In the evening we will explore the night sky with local starlight guides.
DAY 7
The rocky volcanic soil of the Canary Islands makes this excellent winemaking territory, and this morning we will enjoy a tasting at a local winery. Later we make our way to the Sitio Litre Orchid Garden where more than 300 varieties of orchid can be seen and the Parque Taoro Water Garden.
DAY 8
We will check out of the hotel after breakfast for our return flight from Tenerife.
