THE ITINERARY

DAY 1 – ROME / OSTIA ANTICA
Flying to Rome this morning, we will head to the ancient Roman site of Ostia Antica, where we stay tonight in sea-view rooms at the 4* Smy Aran Blu Roma Mare. We will have a welcome dinner where we shall sample Roman specialities and the local Frascati wines.

DAY 2 – OSTIA ANTICA
This morning we check out of the hotel and visit the ruins of Ostia Antica, once an important trading hub in the Roman Empire. In the afternoon we will travel the short distance to Civitavecchia to board the Star Flyer for the six-night sailing. We will enjoy drinks on deck as the wind fills the sails and we depart the harbour.

DAY 3 – AT SEA / COOKERY DEMONSTRATION
Today is spent at sea, travelling south under full sail. To introduce the cuisine of Sicily, Valentine will give a cooking demonstration on deck, followed by lunch. In the afternoon, relax and enjoy the sensation of gliding across the sea and the more adventurous passengers may enjoy the opportunity to climb the rigging or steer the ship.

DAY 4 – LIPARI & STROMBOLI
This morning we arrive at the volcanic archipelago of the Aeolian Islands, where we will visit the island of Lipari. We will have a tour of the island, followed by lunch at one of the best restaurants where we will indulge in local seafood and Malvasia delle Lipari, a naturally sweet wine produced on the island. In the evening we will enjoy drinks on deck as we sail around the active volcano of Stromboli.

DAY 5 – MESSINA
Arriving on the Sicilian mainland this morning, Valentine will lead us around the historic food market of Messina. We will have lunch in a local restaurant and sample the local speciality mezza con panna el caffe, a coffee-flavoured granita with cream. Messina is also home to one of Sicily’s finest cathedrals which has the largest and most complex mechanical and astronomical clock in the world.

DAY 6 – AMALFI COAST
This morning is spent cruising up the Calabrian coastline, one of Italy’s most spectacular, unspoilt regions. We will arrive in Amalfi in the afternoon, where we will visit the lemon farm of Salvatore Aceto, who has been growing the celebrated local citrus for generations. We will have a tour of the farm this afternoon, followed by a cooking class inspired by lemons which includes dinner.

DAY 7 – PONZA
Today we will visit the small island of Ponza in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Formed by the rim of an ancient caldera, Ponza has been inhabited since Neolithic times and is home to Roman ruins as well as its famous Blue Grottoes, which were created by the Etruscans. There will be some free time on the island for lunch.

DAY 8
Disembarking Star Flyer this morning, we will be transferred to the airport for our flight home.
STAR FLYER
Born in Stockholm, Mikeal Krafft grew up near one of the largest shipyards in the world. She is 115 metres long and carries just 166 guests in a comfortable, modern cabin with private en-suite facilities. On deck, there are two swimming pools and plenty of space to relax, as well as the convivial alfresco bar.
