Over the last few years, and especially during the pandemic, it has become normal to travel to Australia now either direct on the Qantas flight to Perth, or through the Middle East or Singapore. There is, however, a new challenger to the big airlines, Turkish Airlines through their mega-hub in Istanbul due to start later this year.
From December, Turkish will start flying from Istanbul to Sydney with a stop in Kuala Lumpur four times a week – complimenting its existing Istanbul to Melbourne service which operates via Singapore. This allows anyone who wishes to have different stop-over options, which we find are incredibly popular.
The scheduled times are:
Istanbul | 1515 | Kuala Lumpur | 0620 | Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday |
Kuala Lumpur | 0740 | Sydney | 1830 | Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday |
Sydney | 2040 | Kuala Lumpur | 0155 | Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday |
Kuala Lumpur | 0355 | Istanbul | 1015 | Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Monday |
The airline expects to be able to offer direct Istanbul to Australia services from late 2026 when they receive the first of their A350-1000 aircraft. These are the same aircraft Qantas are planning to use as part of Project Sunrise and their direct services from the UK to the Eastern coast of Australia in 2026.
