Copenhagen
Copenhagen, the charming capital of Denmark, offers a blend of historic landmarks, modern design, and a laid-back atmosphere that captivates visitors. Nyhavn, with its colourful 17th-century townhouses and lively waterfront, is one of the city’s most iconic spots, perfect for enjoying a canal tour or dining at one of its many restaurants. The city’s historic core, Indre By, is home to attractions like the Amalienborg Palace, the official residence of the Danish royal family, and Rosenborg Castle, where visitors can view the Danish crown jewels. For a touch of magic, the Tivoli Gardens amusement park, one of the oldest in the world, enchants travellers with its whimsical rides, gardens, and seasonal events.
Copenhagen is renowned for its cycling culture, and exploring the city by bike is one of the best ways to see its diverse neighbourhoods. In Vesterbro, you’ll find trendy cafes, art galleries, and lively nightlife, while Nørrebro is known for its multicultural vibe and culinary hotspots. Christianshavn, with its charming canals, offers a more peaceful setting, and the Freetown Christiania is an alternative enclave where art and free-spirited living take centre stage. No trip to Copenhagen is complete without visiting The Little Mermaid statue, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale, which has become a symbol of the city.
The culinary scene in Copenhagen is another highlight, with the city boasting numerous Michelin-starred restaurants, including the world-famous Noma. For a more casual experience, head to Reffen, a popular street food market by the water offering cuisines from around the globe. Danish pastries and smørrebrød, traditional open-faced sandwiches, are local favourites that should not be missed. Combine this culinary adventure with the city’s rich design heritage, from the sleek architecture of the Black Diamond Library to the stylish shops and studios in the Designmuseum Denmark, and you’ll discover why Copenhagen is a top destination for both culture and creativity.

Our Favourite Hotels in Copenhagen

D’Angleterre
Copenhagen’s grandest and most luxurious hotel has been welcoming European society for over 250 years. Still in private hands, it stands as one of the last great hotels of tradition, where service, ambience, comfort, and elegance are of utmost importance. Located in the heart of Copenhagen on Kings New Square, the hotel underwent a complete renovation in 2013, emerging as a revitalised palace inspired by its rich heritage. With 90 spacious bedrooms, the hotel boasts lounges, a bar, a Michelin-starred restaurant renowned for its famous full buffet breakfast, a spa with a fitness centre, indoor swimming pool, Turkish bath, jacuzzi, sauna, and treatment rooms.

Nobis Copenhagen
Opened in 2017, the Nobis boasts an excellent location next to the renowned Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek museum and Tivoli Gardens. The elegant building, formerly home to the Royal Danish Academy of Music, dates back to 1903. During the renovation, care was taken to preserve the original architecture while adding a contemporary touch with stylish Danish furnishings. The 77 rooms and suites feature parquet flooring, high ceilings, four-poster beds, and marble bathrooms. The restaurant ‘NOI’ offers casual fine dining, serving modern cuisine made with quality, seasonal ingredients. The Nobis also includes a small gym, a relaxation area with sauna and hammam.

71 Nyhavn
This famous hotel has a fabulous location right on the waterfront of the historical Nyhavn harbour in the centre of Copenhagen. It is a few minutes’ walk from the Royal Theatre, the Royal Palace and the Stroget (the city’s main pedestrian shopping street). The hotel is housed within two former warehouses which are connected on the ground floor by the lobby – the Yellow Warehouse dates back to 1830 and the protected Red Warehouse to 1804. There are 130 rooms in total and all have recently undergone a full renovation and feature exposed wooden beams, modern bathrooms and many have excellent views to the harbour. There is a cosy lobby bar and an excellent Italian restaurant ‘Il Rosmarino’.
Copenhagen is a beautiful city, and perfect for exploring on foot. I have been a couple of times – one in April when it was extremely windy (and do note there isn’t a huge amount of shelter in the city), and once in September for a concert.
However, being in Scandinavia it’s also really quite expensive, where I paid nearly £15 for a sandwich and a £150 a night for a hotel room where I could touch both sides of the room at the same time! Just be prepared for it to be quite expensive, especially at some of the peak times around summer and the autumn.
