Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and year-round sunshine, making it a top destination for travellers. Visitors can explore the island’s diverse landscapes, from its volcanic peaks to lush forests and golden sandy beaches. One of the island’s most famous landmarks is Mount Teide, the third-largest volcano in the world, which provides breathtaking panoramic views and excellent hiking opportunities. Tenerife’s coastline is dotted with beautiful beaches like Playa de las Américas, known for its lively atmosphere, and Costa Adeje, which is perfect for families and those looking for a more tranquil experience.

In addition to its natural beauty, Tenerife is rich in cultural experiences that reflect its fascinating history. The island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, boasts a mix of modern and colonial architecture, with attractions such as the Auditorio de Tenerife and the bustling Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África. For those seeking history and tradition, the town of La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers charming streets lined with colourful buildings and historical landmarks. Tenerife also hosts vibrant festivals throughout the year, such as the Carnival of Santa Cruz, which is one of the largest and most spectacular in the world, drawing visitors from across the globe.

In the picturesque harbour town of Puerto de la Cruz, just six acres away from lush, beautifully landscaped gardens, the Botanico is renowned for its exceptional service and is the ideal spot to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of the south. Originally built in a rather uninspiring modern style, the 252 beautifully furnished rooms all boast balconies. The hotel boasts an impressive spa complex offering a wide range of treatments and programs designed to achieve maximum rejuvenation! There are four restaurants, including an exquisite Asian fine dining experience. The hotel also features two swimming pools – one main outdoor pool and one indoor pool within the spa complex. Nestled amidst lush gardens and opulent pool villas, this resort exudes a rustic chic design that’ll transport you to Bali or the Caribbean. It’s a peaceful haven, a million miles away from the crowded mass market resorts on the island.

Parador, Tenerife

Parador Las Canadas del Teide

70 kilometres from Santa Cruz, the island’s capital, and soaring over 2,000 meters above sea level, this exclusive property is the only one within the Teide National Park. It’s conveniently located near the mountain’s summit, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Teide cone and the Chaorra crater. This charming Parador boasts just 37 elegantly furnished bedrooms, with a cosy lounge featuring an open fire, a bar, an indoor pool, and a well-equipped gym. Whether you’re an avid hiker or an astronomy enthusiast, this place is perfect for you. The Parador even has two high-powered telescopes and fascinating astronomy talks are held every Friday.

I have been travelling to Tenerife since 1994, and a lot has changed since then. The south of Tenerife has grown immensely and is now the destination in the Canary Islands for staying at an upmarket hotel, thanks to the newer Costa Adeje development only allowing 4 and 5* hotels.

There is however a lot more to do than staying at a nice hotel! It has long been known for Whale and Dolphin excursions given it’s protected waters and is a lovely morning or afternoon out, especially if you take one of the lovely yachts which provide refreshments whilst sailing along the coast.

Beyond the usual resorts, you’ll find a whole different side to the island, one which has its roots set in history, food production and a strong sense of community. The northern towns of Garachico, La Orotava and La Laguna are a must-visit, and are generally off the usual tourist trail in the south.

Over the years I have travelled extensively around the island, either stayed or visited most of the big name hotels, and done everything from hiking to stargazing there!
