The autumn is a great time of year to go on a city break to Europe, with the temperatures cooler than over the summer. What better way than also combine with an exhibition at one of the many galleries on Europe, and here are a few highlights for the second half of the year.

Vienna
Rembradt-Hoogstraten: Colour and Illusion at Kunsthistorisches Museum
From 8 October 2024 until 12 January 2025

This autumn, the Kunsthistoriches Museum presents ‘Rembrandy-Hoogstraten: Colour and Illusion’, which will explore the Dutch master’s work from the perspective of his pupil Samuel van Hoogstraten, including 60 works by both artists, with loans from New york, Paris, Madrid and important private collections. In addition, don’t forget to enquire about tickets to opera performances.

Venice
Willem de Kooning and Italy at the Gallerie dell’Accademia
Until 15 September 2024

One of the most innovative and influential artists of the twentieth century, this exhibition will be the first to explore the impact of Willem de Kooning’s two Italian visits, which took place in 1959 and 1969. Due to open to coincide with the start of the 60th Art Biennale, the exhibition will display the art he made in Italy, alongside later paintings, drawings and sculptures spanning from the late 1950’s to the 1980’s. You could also include an opera performance as well.

Dresden
Casper David Friedrich: Where It All Started at the Albertinum and the Residenzschloss
From 24 August 2024 until 5 January 2025

The culmination of a year of events marking the 250th anniversary of the artist’s birth, Dresden will be holding an exhibition at two venues, in his home city. Caspar David Friedrich lived in Dresden for more than forty years, and it was in the Saxon countryside that he found much of the inspiration for his Romantic paintings. He hiked in the scenic surrounds close to the city and further afield and studied the masters in the city’s museums, inspiring many of his most outstanding masterpieces, regarded today as the pre-eminent works of German Romanticism.

Vienna
Chagall at the Albertina
From 28 September 2024 until 9 February 2025

This September the Albertina will hold a major retrospective of the works of Marc Chagall (1887-1985). The exhibition will bring together 90 works in a dazzling display of the artists’s distinctive whimsical and poetic pictorial worlds. From October, visitors will be able to combine this exhibition with Rembrandt at the Kunsthistoriches.

Paris
Matisse: The Red Studio at teh Fondation Louis Vuitton
Until 9 September 2024

In a new collaboration with New York’s MoMA, the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris will present this exhibition through summer 2024. Focusing on the famous 1911 masterpiece of the same name, one of the MoMA’s iconic works since its acquisition in 1949, it will reunite the artworks shown in this painting for the first time since they left Matisse’s studio in Issy-les-Moulineaux.

St Paul de Vence
Donnard-Matisse, a friendship; at the Maeght Foundation
From 29 June until 6 October 2024

France’s first foundation for modern and contemporary art, the Maeght Foundation will celebrate its 60th anniversary in the summer of 2024. This will be marked by a major summer exhibition, which focuses on the relationship between Pierre Bonnard and Henri Matisse, and traces their links with the Maeght family for whom the two friends embodied two geniuses of the 20th century, sharing with them the great – and more trivial – moments of life. The exhibition is organised around a number of different themes and features a wealth of rare works and documents on loan for the occasion.
