Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta, a stunning island in Thailand’s Krabi province, is the perfect escape for those seeking a laid-back holiday with breathtaking scenery. Known for its long, uncrowded beaches, turquoise waters, and lush jungle-covered hills, Koh Lanta offers a more relaxed alternative to its busier neighbours, such as Phuket and Koh Phi Phi. Whether you’re looking to unwind on Klong Nin Beach, explore the vibrant coral reefs of Koh Rok, or take in the sunset at Bamboo Bay, this island provides the ultimate tropical getaway. With a mix of luxury resorts, boutique beachfront bungalows, and affordable guesthouses, Koh Lanta caters to every type of traveller.

Beyond its stunning coastline, Koh Lanta is home to a rich cultural heritage and a welcoming local community. Visitors can wander through Lanta Old Town, a charming fishing village with traditional wooden houses, seafood restaurants, and artisan shops. The island is also a gateway to Mu Ko Lanta National Park, where you can hike scenic trails, visit the iconic lighthouse, and spot wildlife such as monkeys and monitor lizards. For those looking to immerse themselves in local life, a visit to the sea gypsy villages offers a glimpse into the island’s fascinating history and traditions.

Koh Lanta is also a paradise for adventure seekers and food lovers alike. Scuba diving and snorkelling are among the top activities, with vibrant marine life and clear waters around sites like Hin Daeng and Hin Muang. Kayaking through the mangrove forests or taking a boat trip to the nearby islands adds to the experience. After a day of exploration, visitors can enjoy mouth-watering Thai cuisine at beachfront restaurants, from freshly grilled seafood to classic dishes like massaman curry and pad Thai. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, cultural experiences, or outdoor adventures, Koh Lanta is a dream holiday destination in Thailand.

We’ve Stayed Here

Nestled on the largest island in Koh Lanta Yai, the Pimalai Resort and Spa is a tropical paradise. With 79 rooms, villas, and suites spread across lush gardens with breathtaking sea views, this resort is a true oasis. Covering an impressive 40 hectares of hilly land and lush tropical forest, it boasts almost exclusive access to a pristine sandy beach.

Immerse yourself in the serenity of the renowned spa, where a variety of therapeutic treatments using Thai herbal and natural products are available. For those seeking a taste of both Thai and Western cuisine, the resort offers a range of bars and restaurants. And if you’re looking for a more private experience while still enjoying the resort’s amenities, consider one of the new hilltop pool villas. These villas offer unrivalled ocean views and dramatic sunsets, making them the perfect choice for a romantic getaway.

There is an old addage in the travel industry that the further you get away from an airport, the better the experience you will receive. That’s quite true with Koh Lanta, an island which doesn’t have an airport, but it provides enough for you to feel that you are away from all the hubbub, but not completely isolated on your own island like you find in the Maldives.

For me, Pimalai is quite a remarkable hotel. I got there by speedboat, after a short transfer from Krabi airport to their pontoon – and the journey is quite breathtaking and worth doing over the commercial ferry service (which sometimes has to happen). When you arrive, the welcome is so warm, and the resort so pristine you wouldn’t think it would be out of place as a White Lotus hotel.

I had one of the villas at the top of the property, and as the villas all have their own pools, you find that there is nobody around the ‘villas’ pool – even though it has the most amazing view over the bay. This really is somewhere to celebrate.
