Burgundy
The Burgundy region of France offers a compelling blend of heritage and rural elegance, where Romanesque architecture, quiet waterways and rolling vineyards shape the landscape. Towns like Dijon and Beaune are perfect bases for exploring, with half-timbered houses, Gothic churches and beautifully preserved old quarters. The Hospices de Beaune, a 15th-century hospital with its striking patterned roof tiles, is one of the most iconic sites in the region. Beyond the towns, the Canal de Bourgogne provides a peaceful setting for walking, cycling or canal boating, connecting tiny hamlets and châteaux along the way.
Burgundy’s cultural life is understated but rich, with festivals celebrating classical music, jazz, and local folklore. The Musique & Vin au Clos Vougeot brings together world-class musicians and wine producers for a unique annual event, while smaller towns often host summer concerts in courtyards and village squares. Burgundy also has a deep religious heritage, with historic abbeys such as Cluny and Fontenay—both significant in the development of European monastic life—offering insight into the region’s medieval influence.
Food and wine are inseparable from any trip to Burgundy. The region is renowned for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with world-class vineyards lining the Route des Grands Crus. Traditional dishes like boeuf bourguignon, coq au vin, and escargots are rooted in local wine and slow-cooked techniques. Beaune’s Saturday market is a good place to explore ingredients, and many restaurants take pride in serving seasonal, locally sourced menus. For those looking to get hands-on, cookery classes and wine tastings offer deeper immersion into Burgundy’s gastronomic traditions.

Le Cep
Ideally located a short walk from the famous Hôtel Dieu, Le Cep was originally two 16th century mansions that have evolved into a luxurious hotel.
Its 65 traditionally decorated rooms are all unique and furnished with antiques. Each one bears the name of a village or a great wine of Burgundy and looks out onto the charming street, the hotel’s garden or the courtyard. Breakfast is served in the vaulted cellar or outside in the courtyard in warmer weather and for lunch and dinner, the ‘Loiseau des Vignes’ bistro serves fine Burgundian cuisine. There is also a café-style restaurant for more informal dining. A spa has recently been added.

Grand Hotel La Cloche
Built in 1884 and listed as a heritage monument, La Cloche is located a short walk from the Old Town and the city’s key museums. It has 88 elegantly furnished bedrooms and a renowned gastronomic restaurant leading to a summer terrace and garden. There is a spa with a small pool and a stylish bar.

De La Poste
A former post house in a magnificently picturesque building, the de La Poste is located very close to the cobbled streets of Beaune’s centre. The hotel has 36 rooms decorated in a classical style which overlook either the town or the garden, where guests can dine in fine weather.
