Champagne Region, France

Champagne

The Champagne region in France is steeped in history, from its medieval cathedrals to its role in both world wars. Reims Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was once the coronation site for French kings and remains a striking example of Gothic architecture. Beneath the surface, a network of chalk tunnels—some dating back to Roman times—provides the perfect cellaring environment for Champagne houses. Verdun and the Marne battlefields also offer sobering and important insights into France’s twentieth-century past, with memorials and museums that bring historical context to a visit.

The towns and landscapes across the region blend elegance and rustic charm. Epernay and Reims, two of the area’s most significant cities, are surrounded by gently rolling vineyards that stretch as far as the eye can see. The Avenue de Champagne in Epernay is lined with prestigious Champagne houses, many of which offer guided tours and tastings in their cellars. The village of Hautvillers, where Dom Pérignon is buried, is particularly scenic—narrow lanes, old stone buildings and vineyard views make it ideal for slow, exploratory walks. For a more immersive experience, cycling routes wind through the vines, connecting small producers and family-run estates.

The food of the Champagne region reflects its agricultural heritage and elegant associations. Local markets brim with artisanal cheeses like Chaource and Langres, and menus in traditional auberges feature regional dishes such as jambon de Reims, boudin blanc and potée champenoise. Naturally, meals here are often accompanied by a glass—or flight—of Champagne, with producers from household names to small growers offering opportunities to taste different styles. In recent years, the culinary scene has also attracted young chefs working with local ingredients in fresh and creative ways, making the Champagne region as appealing to food-lovers as it is to history buffs and wine enthusiasts.
