As many of you know, I have been to Tenerife many times over the last 25 years. More recently I have been travelling there a couple of times a year and have visited the majority of the deluxe properties in the south of the island.

With a call coming in a couple of weeks ago to visit the Abama, I jumped at the chance as it is over 10 years since I last visited and so much has changed. Plus, the weather is bad either in December!!

Yes, the Ritz Carlton Abama is not located near many other properties on the island, it’s located between two banana plantations near the small fishing village of Playa San Juan. You currently can’t access the village by foot, but you can get a taxi or the local bus service (get a Ten+ card from the airport to get a discount on the bus), and the hotel provides a shuttle to the shopping centre in Costa Adeje.

What the Abama does provide is space, there is so much room for everyone with the seven outdoor pools, the beach and lovely secluded gardens. There is even a dedicated adults only pool and a special family pool where inflatables are allowed! Some suites even come with their own buggy to get you around the resort!

There are 10 restaurants including the two-Michelin star MB and one-star Kabuki. I ate at the El Mirador (fish speciality), Txoko (Spanish) and Los Chozos (Mediterranean) – along with breakfast in the El Mirador, located at the bottom of the hill, by the sea.

The Kids Club is excellent, along with a new teenagers-focused ‘The Zone’ with a nighclub feel featuring arcade games and DJ booth – a special teenager’s programme is only featured during school holidays. For the more active, there is a 18 hole golf course and tennis courts – or you can relax in the excellent spa.

The quality of the resort shines through and the location away from the majority of other hotels is actually a selling point, still only 30 minutes away from the airport. There is something for everyone.
