Manitoba, Canada

Manitoba

Manitoba offers a different kind of Canadian escape — vast, open landscapes, little-known wilderness, and the chance to see wildlife few others do. Most famously, Churchill draws visitors from around the world for its polar bears in autumn and beluga whales in summer. It’s one of the only places on Earth where you can see both in the wild, often with the Northern Lights dancing overhead. Elsewhere, you can kayak through boreal forests, fish in clear northern lakes, or follow hiking trails across the rocky Canadian Shield.

The province’s roots run deep. Long before European settlers arrived, Indigenous peoples — including the Cree, Dene and Anishinaabe — lived along the waterways that still shape travel routes today. Winnipeg, the provincial capital, grew from a fur-trading post into a cultural hub, and you can trace that past at The Forks, where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet. The city also houses the striking Canadian Museum for Human Rights — a national landmark and a thoughtful space to explore global and local histories.

Manitoba has a quiet confidence. It’s where Icelandic settlers founded Gimli, now home to the largest Icelandic festival outside Iceland. It’s where you’ll find the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, one of the oldest in North America. And it’s where the landscapes open out enough to remind you just how much space Canada has to offer. Whether you’re after rare wildlife encounters, cultural depth or time off-grid, Manitoba rewards the curious.

The Great Polar Bear Gathering

8 day holiday

Winnipeg, Churchill

This eight-day itinerary begins with a flight to Winnipeg, where you’ll settle into the historic Fort Garry Hotel before exploring the city with a guide. Highlights include a visit to Fort Whyte Alive, where you can see bison up close, and the Manitoba Museum, which showcases the region’s natural and cultural heritage. After a welcome dinner with your group and guide, you’ll be fitted with warm gear in preparation for the days ahead.

From there, you fly north to Churchill on a chartered plane, arriving in polar bear territory. Over several days, you’ll venture out in specially designed ‘Polar Rovers’ to view the bears in their natural tundra habitat, with expert commentary from your expedition leader. There are also chances to see the Northern Lights, enjoy a dog sledding experience, and explore Churchill’s frontier-town character. Your trip ends with a return to Winnipeg for a farewell dinner, before flying back to the UK.
