Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s vibrant capital, is a city of striking contrasts, where modern skyscrapers stand alongside colonial buildings and bustling street markets. The iconic Petronas Twin Towers dominate the skyline, offering breathtaking views from the observation deck and a chance to walk across the sky bridge connecting the two towers. Merdeka Square, a historic site where Malaysia declared independence, is surrounded by grand colonial-era buildings, including the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. The Batu Caves, just outside the city, are a must-visit, featuring a towering golden statue of Lord Murugan and a series of Hindu temple caves set within a dramatic limestone hill. Meanwhile, Bukit Bintang and Chinatown pulse with energy, filled with shopping, nightlife, and local street markets that give Kuala Lumpur its dynamic urban charm.

Kuala Lumpur’s cultural diversity is reflected in its mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences, creating a rich and layered identity. The city is home to stunning mosques like Masjid Jamek, a striking example of Mughal architecture, and Thean Hou Temple, a colourful six-tiered Chinese temple dedicated to the goddess of the sea. The Islamic Arts Museum showcases exquisite artefacts from across the Muslim world, while street murals in areas like Kampung Baru add a contemporary artistic touch to the city. Kuala Lumpur is also known for its thriving festival scene, celebrating everything from Chinese New Year and Deepavali to Hari Raya Aidilfitri, with streets lit up in dazzling displays of culture and tradition. The music scene is just as diverse, ranging from traditional gamelan performances to modern live bands in the city’s many bars and clubs.

Food is one of the biggest highlights of Kuala Lumpur, with its street food scene among the best in Asia. Jalan Alor, a lively night food market, serves up a feast of local specialities, from smoky satay skewers to fragrant char kway teow. Nasi lemak, Malaysia’s national dish, is a must-try, with its rich coconut rice, spicy sambal, and crispy anchovies. Little India in Brickfields offers a taste of authentic banana leaf rice and freshly made roti canai, while Petaling Street in Chinatown is the place to go for legendary Hokkien mee and dim sum. High-end restaurants in KLCC and Bangsar provide fine dining experiences with a Malaysian twist, blending local ingredients with international techniques. Whether eating at a hawker stall or an elegant rooftop restaurant, Kuala Lumpur’s food scene is an essential part of its identity.

Both Jackie and I love Kuala Lumpur. It’s kind of the best of both worlds between Bangkok and Singapore. It’s not so clinical and now city destination led as Singapore, but less crazy than the madness that’s Bangkok.

Still, there is so much that you can do within the city – either from it’s colonial past or its new futuristic self, plus being one of the cheapest cities to stay in a five-star hotel.
