Menorca
Menorca, the quietest of Spain’s Balearic Islands, offers a distinct blend of natural beauty and historical depth. Unlike its livelier neighbours, Menorca is dotted with prehistoric monuments such as taulas and navetas, giving visitors a direct line to its ancient Talayotic past. Ciutadella, the island’s former capital, is a maze of elegant limestone buildings, 13th-century churches and bustling squares, while the current capital Mahón boasts one of the largest natural harbours in the world and a fascinating legacy of British influence, visible in its Georgian-style architecture. Menorca’s unspoilt landscapes and small fishing villages make it an ideal base for walks, cycling, and exploring hidden archaeological sites.
The island’s coastal allure is undeniable. Menorca is known for its turquoise coves (calas), often only accessible by foot or boat, offering some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean. Water sports such as kayaking, paddleboarding and diving are popular, particularly along the island’s southern coastline. The Camí de Cavalls – a historic coastal path that encircles the island – invites walkers and horse riders to experience dramatic sea views and secluded bays. Birdwatching is also a draw, with the S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park providing a haven for wildlife and tranquillity.
Menorca’s food scene is rooted in local tradition with subtle international influence. Its signature dish, caldereta de langosta (lobster stew), is a must-try in the fishing town of Fornells. You’ll also find excellent cheeses (particularly the famous Mahón cheese), cured sausages, and traditional pastries like ensaïmada. Many menus showcase local produce and seafood, often enjoyed al fresco with a view of the sea or in a rustic inland setting. Don’t miss tasting the island’s own Xoriguer gin, distilled in Mahón and often served with lemonade as a pomada – a popular drink during the island’s summer fiestas. These festivals, steeped in tradition and centred around horses and music, provide insight into Menorca’s unique cultural identity.

Our Favourite
Nestled just 15 minutes from Mahón airport, this luxurious and tranquil agro-tourism property is a member of the esteemed Small Luxury Hotels. Formerly a traditional Menorcan farm, the hotel’s buildings date back to the 17th century. Today, part of the land has been transformed into vineyards, where the hotel’s own wine is produced.
The hotel boasts 24 elegant rooms and cottages, each elegantly decorated with natural fabrics and colours. Guests can unwind in the large saltwater swimming pool, offering panoramic views, or indulge in a relaxing massage at one of the massage rooms. A fitness centre is also available for those seeking to stay active. Dining enthusiasts will be delighted by the hotel’s gastronomic restaurant, which serves delicious lunch and dinner options every day.

Son Vell
Just a 20-minute drive from Cuitadella, in the western part of the island, lies the charming hotel Son Vell. Nestled within a beautiful 200-hectare private estate, it’s a paradise with landscaped gardens, olive groves, fig and citrus trees, and an organic vegetable garden. Opened in 2023 after a meticulous restoration, the hotel’s heart is a handsome 18th-century sandstone manor house and a series of historic estate buildings that house the majority of the 34 rooms and suites.
The interiors are designed to create a peaceful and elegant atmosphere with soft tones and antique furniture that perfectly blend with the rural vibe. All rooms are generously sized, and you’ll find amenities like two swimming pools, a pétanque court, massage rooms, a wine tasting cellar, and an outdoor cinema.
But Son Vell is more than just a hotel; it’s a hub for activities. You can indulge in cookery workshops, go for nature walks, practice yoga, stargaze, or take guided biking tours. Just a short cycle ride from the hotel is the Camí de Cavalls, the bridlepath that winds around the island, and the unspoilt cove of Cala de Son Vell. It’s a 10-minute ride away and offers private sea swimming.
For a relaxed lunch in the sun, head to Sa Clarissa, one of the two restaurants at Son Vell. They serve delicious dishes inspired by traditional Menorcan recipes using the best locally sourced produce. And if you’re looking for a more intimate dining experience, try Vermell.
