Lausanne

Lausanne

Perched on the northern shore of Lake Geneva, Lausanne is a compact city with a lively atmosphere and an elegant setting. Its steep, winding streets lead from the grand Gothic cathedral at the top of the old town down to the lakeside promenade at Ouchy, where locals stroll beside the water and relax in leafy parks. Lausanne is also the Olympic capital, home to the International Olympic Committee and an impressive museum that charts the history of the Games through multimedia exhibits and original artefacts.

Historically, Lausanne has been a centre of learning and liberal thought. The city’s university is one of the oldest in Switzerland, and figures such as Voltaire and Rousseau spent time here in the 18th century. Today, this intellectual energy continues, paired with a flair for the arts — you’ll find independent galleries, contemporary dance companies and a strong music scene, from jazz clubs to classical performances at the Opéra de Lausanne. The cathedral, one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Switzerland, offers sweeping views over the rooftops and the lake beyond.

Lausanne is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding Lavaux wine region, a UNESCO-listed landscape of terraced vineyards that spill down towards the lake. You can take a boat cruise, hop on the local train, or walk the wine trails through villages like Saint-Saphorin and Lutry, stopping for tastings along the way. Whether you’re sipping Chasselas by the water, exploring lakeside castles or shopping in the city’s boutique-lined streets, Lausanne combines relaxed lakeside living with cultural depth and Alpine charm.
