Newfoundland

Newfoundland feels a world apart — wild cliffs, remote villages and an Atlantic coastline shaped by wind and waves. Nature’s the main draw here. You can walk alongside icebergs drifting past the shore, spot puffins nesting on sea stacks, or watch humpbacks breach just offshore. Gros Morne National Park is a standout, with its dramatic fjords, ancient mountains and hiking trails that cut through otherworldly geology. There’s also the rugged beauty of the East Coast Trail, where paths weave past lighthouses and tuck into quiet coves.

This is one of the oldest European-settled parts of North America, but its story goes back much further. Indigenous peoples like the Beothuk lived here long before the Vikings landed at L’Anse aux Meadows, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only confirmed Norse site on the continent. Later came Basque fishermen, Irish settlers and English merchants, all of whom left their mark. Today, that mix is still visible — in the music, the accents, the storytelling traditions and the brightly painted row houses of St John’s.

Despite its remoteness, Newfoundland has a strong cultural pull. Writers, musicians and filmmakers are drawn to its edge-of-the-world atmosphere and resilient spirit. Time moves differently here — pubs still host impromptu folk sessions, and locals are famously quick with a tale or a bit of help. It’s the kind of place that rewards a slower pace, where you’ll find yourself staying longer than planned, just to see what’s round the next headland.
