Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia is shaped by the sea — in its landscapes, culture and way of life. Coastal drives lead to quiet fishing villages, windswept headlands and long stretches of sand where the Atlantic meets red sandstone cliffs. The Cabot Trail, looping around Cape Breton Island, is a standout — known for its ocean views, forested hills and the chance to spot whales from the shore. You can kayak in sheltered coves, cycle quiet coastal roads, or visit lighthouses that have watched over these waters for centuries.
The province has a rich and layered history. The Mi’kmaq people have lived here for thousands of years, followed by waves of French, Scottish, Irish and African Nova Scotian communities. In places like Annapolis Royal, Halifax and Grand-Pré, you can trace this past through forts, museums and restored heritage buildings. The French-speaking Acadian culture is still alive along parts of the coast, with traditional music, cuisine and festivals offering a glimpse into another side of Atlantic Canada.
Music runs deep here — from Gaelic fiddle tunes to East Coast folk. Nova Scotia has long punched above its weight creatively, home to artists like Rita MacNeil and The Rankin Family, as well as writers who draw inspiration from its coastline and culture. Whether you’re after coastal walks, history-rich towns or simply time to slow down by the sea, Nova Scotia offers a laid-back rhythm and a strong sense of place.

This coastal road trip through Atlantic Canada begins in the lively harbour city of Halifax before weaving through seaside towns, national parks and UNESCO World Heritage sites across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. There’s time for whisky tasting in Mabou, hiking in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, and whale watching off Ingonish.
